Now that Bye Bye Birdie is closing, Roundabout Theater Company has lured a commercial production into one of its three Broadway houses: All About Me, starring Michael Feinstein and Dame Edna, will rent Henry Miller’s Theater rather than the previously announced Golden Theatre, a Shubert house. The show is set to begin previews on February 19 and open on March 18, 2010, written by Christopher Durang and directed by Jerry Zaks.
In a typically cheeky press release, the producers of All About Me (Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel) quote Dame Edna as saying, “Henry Miller. John Golden. I just love men.” Feinstein responds, “I wonder if they were lovers.”
Roundabout artistic director Todd Haimes and two of his associates told Variety in an interview that they prefer to consider themselves programmers rather than simply producers of shows that will play the newly renovated Henry Miller’s Theatre. The nonprofit company has a 20-year lease with the owners of the building, the Durst Organization and Bank of America. All About Me will not be part of Roundabout’s subscription season. After opening on October 15, Bye Bye Birdie is set to close on January 24, 2010.
Variety noted that All About Me represents a step toward Roundabout becoming a Broadway landlord, along with the Shuberts, the Nederlanders and Jujamcyn. In addition to Henry Miller’s Theatre, the Roundabout operates the American Airlines Theatre and Studio 54.
